- Using AI tools like Generative Fill
- Applying complex edits like HDR merging and noise reduction
Apple’s M4 chip (the M3 is also a great alternative!), Intel’s latest i9, and AMD’s Ryzen 9 processors offer the best balance of speed and efficiency for heavy editing workflows.
RAM – Essential for Multitasking and Large Files
RAM acts as temporary memory for running programs and keeping files accessible. Lightroom and Photoshop require significant RAM when working with:
- High-resolution images
- Multiple layers and complex PSD files

Traditional external hard drives (HDDs) can severely slow down performance when loading, saving, or exporting images. I know a lot of photographers rely on these for editing to try to take the strain off of their computers while running lightroom. A high-speed internal SSD is necessary to:
- Reduce catalog lag in Lightroom
- Speed up Photoshop’s scratch disk functions
- Allow near-instant loading of high-resolution files
- Enable quick application startup times

Graphics Card (GPU) – Important for AI and 3D Features
While Lightroom and Photoshop don’t rely heavily on GPUs for basic editing, newer AI tools and advanced effects benefit from a dedicated graphics card. A good GPU enhances:

- Monitor: Retina display or external 4K+ monitor
Windows PC (Desktop & Laptop)
- Processor: Intel Core i7/i9 (13th/14th Gen) or AMD Ryzen 7/9 (7000 series or later)
- Operating System: Windows 11 (version 21H2 or later)
- RAM: Minimum 16GB, recommended 32GB+
- Storage: 1TB+ NVMe SSD
- Graphics Card: NVIDIA RTX 4060+ or AMD Radeon RX 6800+ (4GB+ VRAM, 8GB+ for 4K editing)
- Monitor: 1920×1080 minimum, 4K preferred for color accuracy

Both Mac and PC offer strong performance, but Mac excels in battery life, color accuracy, and software optimization, while Windows provides better upgradability and raw power for less cost. Choosing the right system depends on your workflow priorities!
Personally, I have the M4 16 in Macbook Pro 48 GB RAM 1 TB SSD. It has sped up my editing significantly!
